This mezuzah case combines ancient Scottish artwork with Jewish folklore. The qeresh, a unicorn-like creature described in the Talmud as a giant deer with a single horn, is depicted here in the style of a Pictish stone carving.
Pictish stones are a famous feature of Scotland's archaeology, elaborately carved with symbols that often include animal motifs. The unicorn is the country's national animal, although it traditionally takes the more popular form of a horned horse rather than a deer.
